STEP UP Charter School exists in the Washington Activity Center (WAC) of the City of Mesa’s Washington Park. In 2008, due to the state of the local economy and ongoing budget reductions within the city of Mesa, funding for the operation of the WAC decreased drastically and was eventually not available anymore. Mesa City Council encouraged the community the need for them to find a community partner to assist with future programming of the WAC or it will be closed.
In early 2011 the West Mesa Community Development Corporation (CDC) connected the owner of Eduprize Charter School (EP) in Gilbert with the City of Mesa to initiate discussions around the possibility of EP as a community partner to assist with future programming of the WAC as a school. It was the following year that an agreement was made between EP, the Mesa PRCF, West Mesa CDC and Washington-Escobedo Community members to open a school in the WAC. The school has been thriving since its opening in July of 2012.
